The famous coronavirus had its effect on everyone especially on their mental health. We all went through a hard time trying to make it through the day sitting on our couch. We made up new trends, found ways to convince ourselves that homemade coffee tasted better (honorary mention: whipped coffee) and tried at home workouts. We celebrated birthdays, weddings and graduation ceremonies through zoom. All experienced a different kind of isolation that none of us had ever experienced before and it was rough. Stepping out of our daily routines, trying to homecook every meal, cleaning the house just to have an excuse to get up didn’t work for us. As we changed the world started to develop as well. The importance of mental health was recognized as mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and even suicide attempts increased. Many of these negative emotions impacted our physical health, including our skin. While some used this opportunity to try everything in the industry, knowing nobody will see us, others struggled with the additional pressure that comes along.
As many had more free time, we focused more on ourselves than ever before. We were also stuck with us so what other choice did we really have? Taking good care of ourselves improved the mental health of many, while structured skincare routines helped provide us with some clarity and stability. Trying new ways to move our body, eating in a balanced manner and taking good care of our skin increased our mood. It made us feel better of ourselves. The form of self care makes us more aware of ourselves, eventually making us accept who we are more! Loving ourselves is the best self care method but of course who wouldn’t want to do that with a hot chocolate in their hand.
We realized that mental health also has effects on skin, often presenting us with acne, rashes and redness. In the name of self-care and additionally to improve our skin, as many hoped to return with a glowup, trends of home-made face masks arose. Avocado masks, honey hair masks and cucumber eye patches we’re extremelry popular, although citicised by many growing experts, such as Skincare by Hyram.
Nevertheless, DIY skincare got its hype, marking the quarantine. It was easy to make and gave us some stability while being more affordable than most skincare products on the market.
So, as the World Health Organisation officially declares the Covid crisis to have to come to an end, let us reflect and honour our growth since then.
